Drew Barrymore’s Perfect Breakfast: Beer

At last night’s premiere of Lucky You, a handful of the world’s top poker players — Todd Brunson, Sam Farha, Chau Giang, anyone? — walked the red carpet with Drew Barrymore, Eric Bana, and Robert Duvall. The perpetually pushed-back poker drama, which has been included in many a seasonal movie preview thanks to its revolving door of release dates in the past year, is finally opening this Friday — unluckily, you might say, on the same day as Spider-Man 3. Directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile), this pokerphile’s delight was shot in Vegas and casts Bana as a top-notch player who bears a grudge against his higher-notch father, played by Duvall.

We asked Horatio Sanz, who plays a gambler in the movie, if he’s picked up any naughty Sin City stories in his day. “One time I was up about three grand at blackjack,” he recalled, noting that his parents live in Vegas. “I was just betting these crazy bets, and I just kept winning. All the players around me were pretty furious. My friend was about to get me off the table and take me to my room, and then I put it all down on one hand and I lost it all. Obviously, alcohol was involved.”

Barrymore, looking stunning in a ruffled, cilantro-green dress, expressed her gratitude for the city’s high tolerance for beer at breakfast. “When I’d get off work at six in the morning from a night shoot and I’d go out for a beer, it didn’t look weird,” she told us. —Mina Hochberg, with additional reporting by Bennett Marcus
