The Friedrich Petzel Gallery asked sixteen artists to reinterpret Willem de Kooning’s sixties-era “Door Cycle,” a series of hollow-core wooden doors featuring de Kooning’s grotesque female figures. Berlin-based artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset took a surrealist approach to the challenge. The resulting work (left) could have practical applications, but we’re not entirely sure landlords and neighbors would approve.
