Recorded in just five days, with only one original track, and based on a concept hatched by Barry Manilow, this Nashville refugee’s latest sounds like a stopgap at best — until you actually listen to it. Mostly Dusty Springfield covers, the collection is a spare, raw-nerves affair and another brilliant chapter in an underappreciated career. Producer Phil Ramone, who actually worked with Dusty, strips away all unnecessary accoutrement, highlighting Shelby’s mournful voice. And the original track “Pretend,” just Lynne and slow finger-picked guitar, is downright tragic.
