Tapes 'n Tapes Show a Triumph Over Great Obstacle

Friday night’s Tapes 'n Tapes set at the Fillmore was preceded by near-heroic acts of musical devotion. The hirsute percussionist for openers Vampire Hands shook his tambourine so hard it broke. The singer for White Denim randomly smacked himself in the forehead. Tapes 'n Tapes, meanwhile, took to the stage early … but would not play an encore. Singer Josh Grier gave a somewhat cryptic explanation for this: “We had an issue in Boston, and I somehow lost my voice.” And so he sipped from a cup during the kinetic set and kept the banter to a minimum. Then, with only a few songs left, he announced that his voice was finally coming back — “now that the show's almost over. Motherfucker.” As it happens, he was just launching into “Insistor,” the song everyone was most inclined to sing along to. He might’ve slapped himself on the forehead. —Vanita Salisbury
