Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York has split critics and fans, since it’s both spectacularly awful (Cameron Diaz) and incredible (Daniel Day-Lewis). But any city dweller has got to love his insanely detailed rendering of New York’s nastiest era, showcasing the teeming nineteenth-century bedlam of downtown’s Five Points.
