The Police Call It a Day

Last night at Madison Square Garden, before a sell-out crowd of people who could miraculously afford tickets, Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland played their purported last-ever show as the Police. To finish, they did “Next to You,” the first track from their 1978 debut album Outlandos d’Amour and ceded the stage to an actual singing fat lady. (Just in case the audience had failed to appreciate the finality of the moment, the Looney Tunes “That’s All Folks” theme was then played through the PA.) We’re sad we didn’t make it last night — give us a break, it was the So You Think You Can Dance finale — but we’re mostly just glad that Sting can finally get back to work on the much-anticipated follow-up to Songs From the Labyrinth.
