Filmmaker David Bond Flunks Art Class

With school finally back in session, parents are once again fielding “Am I normal?”–type questions from their kids. To them, we dedicate this sweet little film from Britain, Lions Are Green, about a young colorblind boy who draws a green lion in class and gets called out for it. Director David Bond effectively conveys children’s curious fear of the different, and the inevitable mimicking that follows. Winner of numerous awards, including Best Short Film in the BBC’s Night of Many Stars, it’s the kind of film that avoids the typical pitfall of syrupy sweetness, thanks to an extraordinary lead performance and some simple, no-nonsense direction.
