In unsurprising but still kind of sad news, Playbill reports that Boeing Boeing, which won the 2008 Tony for Best Revival of a Play, will close on January 4. Unlike some of its peers, however, the show actually recouped its initial investment, thanks in no small part to Mark Rylance’s hilarious Tony-winning performance as a befuddled midwesterner. “We chose to close the show when the current cast members’ contracts all expired and to end on a high note rather than forge through the challenges of January and February in a weak economy,” explained producer Sonia Friedman. She did not add: “Also, everyone else was doing it, so we figured, what the hell?” [Playbill]
