Prince Plays Guitar Hero on New Tracks

Susan Mikula’s sic transit 05 (2008).

Lately, Prince has kept busy covering rock songs by the Foo Fighters, Radiohead, and Gnarls Barkley in his still phenomenal live shows (then yanking them off YouTube), but apparently he’s also been hard at work on a new record. Judging from the four new tracks played for Steve Jones’s radio show yesterday, we suspect all those rock covers have had an effect, as three of the tracks — “Wall of Berlin,” “Colonized Mind,” and a cover of Tommy James’s “Crimson & Clover” — are heavy on the guitar. This is actually a little disappointing: He sounds a lot more like Joe Satriani than Dave Grohl — a bit too slick and self-indulgent. Fortunately, the fourth track, “4ever,” and a fifth track leaked to the Internet today, “(There Will Never Be) Another Like Me,” sound more like the funky, freaky Prince we’ve seen on the last three of his comeback records.
