While details are continuing to emerge from the situation that occurred in the early-morning hours on Sunday that left Rihanna bruised and scratched and resulted in the arrest of Chris Brown, there is one outstanding question about the incident that is blowing up on gossip blogs and morning-zoo radio shows: What caused a fight this ferocious to break out in the first place? Depending on whom you believe, Rihanna is either "cooperating with investigators building a domestic violence case against her boyfriend" (L.A. Times) or "reluctant to reveal to investigators specifically what the couple had been arguing about before it turned physical" (E! Online). Regardless of which story is accurate, the lack of public comment on the situation is causing craven gossip addicts to turn to Google in search of answers.
As you might expect, there are a handful of rumors that are making the rounds. The first began yesterday when some hip-hop blogs, none of which is considered to be a credible news outlet, began floating some nasty rumors that a fight erupted between the two regarding STDs. However, those stories didn't really take hold until the nationally syndicated (and Atlanta-based) radio talk-show host Tom Joyner repeated the claims on his program yesterday. But these rumors were quickly refuted by the prominent black website MediaTakeOut, which has been following the "extremely volatile" relationship between Chris Brown and Rihanna for nearly two years now. Instead, they're running a story sent in by "a friend of Chris Brown" that claims Rihanna's injuries — which reportedly include bite marks — were caused when their rented silver Lamborghini crashed into a parked car during a heated argument between the two.
While it's highly unlikely that reps for either Rihanna or Chris Brown will comment on this situation publicly until the police have concluded their investigation, there is one thing that you can be certain of: Namely, that unsubstantiated rumors will continue to fly until a presumably neutral third party — we're looking at you, LAPD — talks to the press.
