Dirty Projectors: Stay Right There

Dirty Projectors’ excellent new album, Bitte Orca, out next week, is streaming in its entirety on NPR, so we figured now’d be a good time to talk about this single, “Stillness Is the Move.” Basically, like most of the stuff the Brooklyn band — songwriter David Longstreth, along with a rotating cast of co-conspirators — has been churning out since 2003’s The Glad Fact, it doesn’t sound much like anything else you’ll hear this week, this month, this year, etc. It’s hard to explain why, exactly, other than by saying it’s more than the sum of its impressive parts: a skittery guitar line, a weighty anchor of a simple little 4/4 beat, and an operatic vocal turn by guitarist Amber Coffman. Enjoy.
