The Vampire’s Assistant Trailer: Vampires Reach the Saturation Point

What is it with the Weitz brothers and vampires? First, baby bro Chris was brought onboard by Summit Entertainment to keep the Twilight series moving down the path of fiscal success when they signed him up as the director of New Moon. And now, older brother Paul — whose CV includes directing credits on About a Boy and In Good Company — is also dealing with the oh-so-trendy immortal bloodsuckers in his new film, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant. However, whereas Twilight derives its strength from the whole sexy-vampire motif, this movie looks as if it will be thematically closer to horror-tinged comedies like Once Bitten. John C. Reilly stars as the head vamp in charge of a band of Monster Squad–esque circus freaks, including a bearded Salma Hayek and a seemingly lycanthropic Jane Krakowski. While this project looks like it may indeed have a few laugh-worthy moments, we sincerely doubt Universal is counting on this teen romp to make any sort of significant cultural impact.
