Robert Downey Jr. is a three-piece suit kind of man — but his slender build and lack of discernible gut allows him to avoid the stuffy banker look, and a dropped stance on his vest keeps things contemporary. He looks good in skinny ties and lapels, implying a fine appreciation for the Mad Men aesthetic. When Downey goes genuinely casual, it’s a little off-putting — a weirdly high waist can ruin a look. This sort of occasional misstep, or even an ill-advised tie, suggest that he’s working without a stylist. And if that’s the case, his ability to make a three-piece suit seem downright hip is all the more impressive.
