Leno-Letterman-Winfrey Ad Was Letterman’s Idea

The surprising Super Bowl ad for David Letterman’s Late Show featuring Oprah Winfrey sandwiched between Jay Leno and Letterman was apparently Letterman’s idea. The spot was filmed last week at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York, according to CBS, and seems to reflect NBC Chairman’s Jeff Gaspin’s stated strategy of promoting Leno’s return to late night with “some humor and a wink, not a sledgehammer.”

“This is the worst Super Bowl party ever,” Letterman says in the ad.

“He’s just saying that because I’m here,” Leno retorts.

So this was kind of like the 2007 Letterman-Oprah Super Bowl ad… except way more uncomfortable.
