For Sale: Updike’s Typewriter

The late John Updike's Olympia "electric 65c" typewriter is expected to fetch $4,000 to $6,000 when it's auctioned by Christie's today. Last year, the typewriter on which Cormac McCarthy wrote his every novel sold for $254,500 — more than ten times its high estimate. But because it's not certain that Updike wrote any of the Rabbit books using his (it may have also been used by his secretary), Christie's is tempering expectations and throwing in the author's metal typewriter cart for free. Not bad! As always, we'll sell you the mostly functioning keyboard this Vulture post was written on for $50. [ArtsBeat/NYT]
