David Mitchell, Peter Carey Land on the Man Booker Long List

The long list for the Man Booker prize has arrived, and the thirteen books on it (selected from 138) include the high-profile David Mitchell novel The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, two-time Booker winner Peter Carey’s Parrot and Olivier in America, Tom McCarthy’s forthcoming C, and Howard Jacobson’s The Finkler Question, which has yet to be published in the states. Notably absent are Martin Amis’s The Pregnant Widow and Ian McEwan’s climate-change novel Solar (apparently Americans are not, per McEwan, the only ones “bored” by global warming). The full list is here and will be reduced to the short list on September 7, at which point you’re probably going to have to read the Mitchell book. [Official site]
