Fela! Sued for Using Photo Without Asking, Paying

Fela! is the latest bigtime production — following Green Day and Vampire Weekend — to have seemingly missed the memo titled “Make sure you have rights to an image before you use said image everywhere.” The Broadway play (but not producers Jay-Z or Will Smith) is being sued for $150,000 by a Brooklyn-based photographer for allegedly using her 1977 photograph of Fela Kuti’s nightclub the Shrine as part of its backdrop without her permission. The play is now in the process of replacing the image, hopefully with one they asked for. [NYDN]
