Guillermo del Toro to Reboot Disney’s Haunted Mansion

Near the end of Comic-Con’s Tron: Legacy panel a few minutes ago, Guillermo del Toro announced plans to co-write, produce, and possibly direct a new movie about Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride. Isn’t there already a perfectly good movie about that, you ask? No, you’re thinking of 2003’s money-losing The Haunted Mansion, which starred Eddie Murphy and was terrible. Luckily, this The Haunted Mansion will be nothing like that one: “We are not returning Eddie Murphy’s phone calls,” del Toro told relieved Comic-Con attendees. He tells The Hollywood Reporter he has a room in his house devoted to Haunted Mansion memorabilia, and that he intends for his film to attract and terrify all-ages audiences: “Walt Disney is one of the creators of some of the scariest images in my childhood. People forget that he not only made sweet images but also images of nightmare.” Sounds like kind of a downgrade from The Hobbit, but we’re cautiously optimistic.
