Eighty-two-year-old W.S. Merwin, a New York native and resident of Hawaii since the seventies, has been selected as Poet Laureate. His first book of poems was shepherded to publication in 1952 by W.H. Auden, and in the past five years he has won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer. You can read some of his poems here.
