Abbey Lincoln died today in Manhattan at age 80. The renowned jazz singer was also a writer, painter, actress, and activist. The Times' obituary explains, "Ms. Lincoln’s career encompassed outspoken civil rights advocacy in the 1960s and fearless introspection in more recent years, and for a time in the 1960s she acted in films with Sidney Poitier."
