Industry Roundup: McConaughey and Hirsch to Headline Killer Comedy

Killer Instinct, Part 1: Matthew McConaughey and Emile Hirsch will star in black comedy Killer Joe, directed by William Friedkin and written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony award winner Tracy Letts. Joe centers on a brother (Hirsch) and sister who plot the death of their mother in order to collect insurance money; they hire “Killer Joe” Cooper (McConaughey), a cop and contract killer, to see it through. No doubt, shirtlessly. [HR]

Killer Instinct, Part 2: Mickey Rourke is attached to star in Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer, the true story of Richard “the Ice Man” Kuklinski, who led a double life for more than 40 years as “both a professional assassin and a doting husband and father in suburban New Jersey.” Natural History and Blow author David McKenna is writing the screenplay based on Philip Carlo’s book. Financier Matty Beckerman said, “This is a role Mickey Rourke was born to play.” Considering the role, wonder how that quote makes Mickey feel. [HR]

Another to Scream: Aimee Teegarden (Friday Night Lights) is the latest to join the cast of Scream 4. This killer apparently has a thing for blond television actresses. [HR]

Across the Pond: Fox has ordered a family-comedy pilot based on a British sitcom. Called Outnumbered, the series is centered on “three rambunctious kids who overwhelm their parents.” Sounds Malcolm in the Middle–riffic. [HR]

Monahan Goes Graphic
: William Monahan (The Departed) will write the adaptation of the Joseph Kosinski graphic novel Oblivion for Disney. The movie is set on a “future Earth, where civilization lives above the clouds and alien scavengers stalk the irradiated surface below.” The action takes place when a “surface drone repairman” finds a woman inside a crashed space pod and is “thrust into an adventure.” [Heat Vision/HR]
