Ever since Ryan Murphy said that Chris Colfer’s Kurt would be getting a boyfriend on Glee’s second season, every casting announcement related to the show has been scrutinized with a deranged obsession that would make Sue Sylvester proud. The arrival of Chord Overstreet as the blond with the ridiculously large mouth (i.e football jock Sam) led some to believe he would become Kurt’s beau, a rumor that was (sort of) shot down by Colfer. The latest turn in this behind-the-scenes soap opera (which is in some ways more intriguing than actual Glee plotlines) is the casting of actor-singer-songwriter Darren Criss, who is best known for his part in a few episodes of ABC’s short-lived Eastwick and his leading role in the viral hit “A Very Potter Musical.”
Criss will be playing “a cute and charismatic gay student from a rival Glee club named the Dalton Academy Warblers.” However, before you film a congratulatory YouTube video for Kurt, take note that a source told EW’s Michael Ausiello that Kurt and Criss’s characters will “maintain a strictly platonic friendship.” (Of course, this could just be an attempt to throw everyone off the scent.) Now for an even more fun mystery: What song will Kurt and Future Boyfriend (whoever he may be) sing when they first fall for each other? A dance-floor rendition of Usher and Pitbull’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love”? An over-the-top “Truly Madly Deeply” during a school assembly? Or perhaps a modified reprise of Kurt’s season-one showstopper “Single Ladies”?
