Jonathan Franzen Won’t Be Getting a National Book Award

Perhaps in the hopes of reminding Americans that other literary novels exist, the National Book Foundation opted not to nominate Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom as one of the best fiction books of the year. Instead, four lady authors, including Nicole Krauss and Lionel Shriver, will duke it out with Peter Carey’s recent Booker prize loser, Parrot and Olivier in America, for the honor. This is not a total loss for Oprah: She’s also a fan of Patti Smith’s memoir, Just Kids, which was nominated in the nonfiction category. [NBF]
