Irvin Kershner, the director best known for helming The Empire Strikes Back, the darkest and most acclaimed film in the Star Wars series, has died at the age of 87. Before directing the first Star Wars sequel at the behest of George Lucas, Kershner was an accomplished director in both television and movies, and later went on to direct films such as Robocop 2 and the James Bond picture Never Say Never Again.
