weekend box office

Johnny Depp Can’t Save The Tourist

Chronicles Of Narnia: Voyage Of the Dawn Treader 3D took first place at the box office this weekend, raking in a modest $24.5 million. Though it technically won the weekend, the third film in the Narnia series earned nearly $40 million less than The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’s opening weekend, and nearly $20 million less than Prince Caspian’s opening weekend. In second place,The Tourist made $17 million, virtual chump change for a movie with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. Regardless, European distributor Studio Canal is planning “the biggest ever release across Europe” for the film, because it’s a remake of a 2005 Canal film, Deadline reports. Next up, Disney’s Tangled 3D took third place, with $14 million, giving it a cumulative $115 million receipt, followed by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which made $8.5 million, reaching a $257.6 million cumulative intake. And in fifth place was Unstoppable, with $3.7 million for the weekend. But Black Swan is now soaring, competing its way to sixth place like some crazed ballerina, despite a small distribution — 90 theaters, versus Unstoppable’s 3,000 theaters — and raking in $3.7 million for the weekend.
