Will Ferrell is no stranger to playing a bumbling politician, but the idea of him teaming up with Zach Galifianakis to play rival presidential candidates in the heart of election year is still pretty exciting. The two of them have signed on for a still-untitled project from director Jay Roach (Dinner for Schmucks, Austin Powers) and writer Shawn Harwell (Eastbound and Down).
While at first glance Roach seems like a strange choice for a political comedy and points towards this being something less than a smart and informed take on our political system, he did also direct Recount for HBO. I’d love to imagine this movie somehow combining the goofiness that these actors are both known for with a take on politics a few notches above, say, Tommy Boy’s take on things. Not that there’s anything wrong with Tommy Boy, but, you know. But the fact that a writer from Eastbound and Down is penning this sure makes me optimistic. We’ll see.
