Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer) will direct a documentary about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, funded by Universal. Gibney is known for making documentaries that include the participation of his subjects. (It's the man who asked Spitzer point-blank, "Why'd you go to hookers?") So will Assange cooperate? "Inconclusive," Deadline reports, reflecting Assange's typical mysterious style. Meanwhile, the WikiLeaks doc will be competing with a film adaptation of Andrew Fowler's Assange biography, announced yesterday. But with Universal's pockets and the possible participation of Assange himself, Gibney's in the lead. [Deadline]
