If there’s one thing we can probably intuit about the marriage of artist/directors Miranda July and Mike Mills, it’s that the two must share a strong love of talking animals. July lit up Sundance this past week with The Future, narrated by a talking cat, and now comes Mills with Beginners (which played at the Toronto Film Festival last year), which offers Ewan McGregor and a Jack Russell terrier that communicates via subtitles. Yes, that sounds a little too cute, but let’s temper the twee with this footnote: It’s his father’s dog, taken in after Dad (Christopher Plummer) comes out of the closet, then dies. The movie shifts freely in time, charting both Plummer’s ebullience at finally living his life right as that life is beginning to come to an end, and McGregor as he tentatively finds love with Melanie Laurent (who impressed in Inglourious Basterds). It comes out this June. Bring your pet.
