Ebert on Huck Finn Controversy: ‘I Should Have Shut Up’

Roger Ebert caused a stir yesterday when he took on the controversy over censored words in a new edition of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, tweeting, "I'd rather be called a Nigger than a Slave." After the commentariat noted that Ebert probably wasn't speaking from his own experience, he conceded today, "You know, this is very true. I'll never be called a Nigger *or* a Slave, so I should have shut the **** up." That's definitely the word in the sentence you would have used your asterisks on, right? [EbertChicago/Twitter]
