Theater pioneer Ellen Stewart passed away yesterday at age 91. Originally a New York City fashion designer, Stewart founded the experimental theater club known as La MaMa in 1961, and the Off–Off Broadway company became one of the most prolific and well-traveled in the world. Stewart died from natural causes after an extended illness, said Mia Yoo, co-artistic director of La MaMa.
