Melissa Leo’s Not Here to Make Friends

"I'm not here to make friends," the phrase beloved by reality-TV stars everywhere, has just made its first official appearance in the Oscar race. For her sure-to-be-Academy Award–nominated performance as the chain-smoking, Boston-accented mother in The Fighter, Melissa Leo didn't break character while on set. When asked about this by the New York Times, Leo replied: "It’s method acting. It’s not perverse. It’s not weird. It’s not sick or mental, but if the camera is going to roll on me, who knows when, in five minutes or in five hours, I’d like to be as close as I can to the character when the camera rolls. I’m not there to make friends. I’m not there to look good. Maybe I’ll come here and make friends and look good tonight, but when I’m working, and it’s just serious.” Survivor producers will be calling you with an offer any minute now, Melissa!
