Filmmaker Gary Winick Dead at 49

Gary Winick, the filmmaker recently behind Letters to Juliet and 13 Going On 30, died yesterday at 49 after a long battle with brain cancer. In 1999, Winnick co-founded InDigEnt, a company that produced nineteen independent digital films over the next decade, including Winick’s own Tadpole, which sold for $6 million to Miramax at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. The news was first reported by filmmaker Matt Dentler over Twitter: “Gary Winick died today. Too late to make the Oscars tribute, but way too early. He leaves behind a legacy of supporting indie film and NYC.” [IndieWire]
