Why Can’t Detroit Have a RoboCop Statue?

Remember the campaign to raise money for a RoboCop statue in Detroit? It worked: $25,000 was brought in via Kickstarter and another $25,000 was chipped in by a private source, which is enough to fund the project. The problem is, Detroit mayor Dave Bing doesn’t think it’s a good idea: “My own personal opinion is that I don’t see where we get a lot of value from that.” Organizer Brandon Walley argues that it would draw tourism, like Philly’s Rocky Balboa and Milwaukee’s Fonzie statues. Also, Peter Weller, the guy who played RoboCop, thinks it’s a good idea. And so does Vulture. Come on, Mayor Bing, make it happen! [AP]
