Rio Flies to the Top Spot at the Box Office

Rio, Jesse Eisenberg’s animated talking-bird movie, took the top spot at the box office by miles this weekend, with a $40 million opening. (As Movieline points out, this is the third week in a row that cartoon animals topped the box office.) Trailing in second, but still in second, is Scream 4, which netted $19 million. (Scream 3 had a $34 million opening weekend.) Last weekend’s victor, Hop, featuring animated talking Easter Bunnies, scored another $11 million, bumping its cumulative earnings to $82.6 million. Soul Surfer is hanging in there, landing in fourth place with $7.4 million, bumping its cumulative earnings to $19.9 million. And Hanna came in fifth, with $7.3 million, bumping its cumulative earnings to $23.3 million. During its opening weekend, The Conspirator, with James McAvoy, landed all the way down in ninth place, earning a weak $3.9 million. [BoxOfficeMojo]
