Hangover Part II Breaks Box-Office Records

Boom: The Hangover Part II is poised to win the award for Biggest Comedy Debut of All-Time, raking in an expected $138.1 million this weekend. The movie also broke the record for the Biggest Opening Weekend of Any R-rated Film, over five days. Thanks to Hangover, a movie about waking up in Bangkok after one crazy night, which New York's David Edelstein calls "absolutely atrocious," this weekend's poised to become the box office's highest-earning Memorial Day weekend on record. Kung Fu Panda 2 is also to thank: The sequel is expected to earn $68.2 million during its debut weekend. Meanwhile, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides took third place at the box office, earning $39.3 million during its second weekend, and Bridesmaids took fourth, making $16.3 million during its third weekend. In fifth place, Thor is still hanging in there: The movie made another $9.3 million, bumping its cumulative earnings to $159.7 million. Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris is doing well for itself, earning $1.9 million on 58 screens, landing in seventh place at the box office. And while Hangover II has got it beat by lots of cash, Terrence Malick's highly anticipated epic, Tree of Life, earned $352,000 on four screens, which is a lot. You can thank us later, Malick.
