If you were seated next to Bristol Palin at the People magazine table at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, what would you use for conversation fodder? This was the exact dilemma that faced Mindy Kaling as she and her boyfriend (whose name we forget, but who was really cute!) wandered through the pre-dinner cocktail reception, preparing to descend into a sea of potential awkwardness.
Mindy had met Bristol the day before and exchanged some pleasantries, but it sounded like the conversation hadn’t gone very far. So what did she plan to talk to Bristol about in round two? “I don’t know, really. She likes The Office, so that’s something. She has amazing legs,” Mindy mused, while her boyfriend pointed out Bristol’s history on Dancing With the Stars. “Oh yeah!” Mindy went on, “She looks like a CW actress, not the accidental daughter of an Alaskan governor who happened to get nominated for vice-president.” So why not just bring up her awesome legs, we suggested. “She’s going to think I’m a lesbian!” Mindy protested. “Tell her that you and your boyfriend were admiring her legs,” Mindy’s boyfriend offered. “She’s going to think we want a three-way!” Then for a minute we debated whether that would be a bad thing, with Mindy and her boyfriend coming down on the side of “Yes, it would be bad” and us coming down on the side of, “Well, wouldn’t that be a great story?”
Alas, when we tweeted at Kaling the next day to find out if she’d managed to spend most of the dinner talking about Bristol’s amazing legs, Kaling tweeted back: “I never saw her again! Was she even there at all? Was it all made up? Am I her? Reeling.”
