This excerpt from Mindy Kaling's upcoming essay collection Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me is heavy on the brand names — Kiehl's, Converse, Bumble and bumble, and J.Crew all get shout-outs in the first few pages — but largely redeems itself with a really solid list of "best friend rights and responsibilities." They include "We Sleep In The Same Bed" on trips and such, because "how else will we talk until we fall asleep?"; "We Will Trade Off Being Social Activities Chair For Our Outings" ("Neither of us gets to be the princess all the time, I get that"); and "I Will Try To Like Your Boyfriend Five Times," because "this is a fair number of times hang out with your boyfriend and withhold judgement." In addition to being humorous, these are just plain good rules for BFFs. [Scribd]
