Is Cars 2 The First Sub-Par Pixar Movie?

It had to happen at some point, and it was almost certainly going to have something to do with talking cars. Based today’s Cars 2 reviews, the film might be the first Pixar film that couldn’t make it above “merely adequate.” Says Roger Ebert, “I have no idea what kids will make of the movie. At a time when some “grown-up” action films are relentlessly shallow and stupid, here is a movie with such complexity that even the cars sometimes have to pause and explain it to themselves.” The major problem with the sequel? Apparently it’s the seemingly unwarranted prominence of Mater, the tow truck sidekick voiced by none other than Larry the Cable Guy. “Pixar has now found its redneck Jar-Jar Binks. Such a proud moment,” declares NYTimes’ A.O. Scott. Me so horrified.
