About 300 friends and family paid tribute to Gil Scott-Heron yesterday at Harlem’s Riverside Church. Speakers included his daughter Gia, who read her original poem “Time” and sang Bette Midler’s “The Rose”; his first wife, Brenda Sykes, who told the story of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar introducing the two of them; and, in a surprise but appropriate appearance, Kanye West, who ended the ceremony with “Lost in the World.” [NYDN]
