Noted American painter and sculptor Cy Twombly has passed away, it was announced today. Twombly's massive, calligraphic paintings won him the spotlight in the fifties and sixties, when he ran with a New York art crowd that included Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. Twombly later settled in Italy, where he died at age 83 after battling cancer. [AP]
