Larry Crowne Limps Into Theaters

The critics were never thrilled with this lukewarm romantic comedy, many suggesting that Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks together on the big screen just had no zing, pop, fizzle, ka-boom, etc. (We compiled a more complete a scathing rundown of the movie’s critics here.) So it’s not much of a surprise that Larry Crowne debuted last night with a tepid $4 million take. Deconstructing the audience so far, the Hollywood Reporter says almost three quarters of the movie’s audience opening night were over the age of 50, so at least Roberts and Hanks’s peers consider them an endearing couple. The question now is whether Roberts-and-Hanks take two will do better than take one (2008’s Charlie Wilson’s War), which grossed about $66 million nationwide, according to Box Office Mojo. [THR]
