Lorrie Moore Has Some Thoughts She Would Like to Share on Friday Night Lights

Coach!

Late-breaking, amazing development! Lorrie Moore has written an essay about her love of Friday Night Lights. If you are a person who loves neither Friday Night Lights nor short-story writer and novelist Moore – and if you are one of these people, what is wrong with you?! – this may not make you squee in anticipation, but if you are anything like us, you are squeeing up a storm this very second. The piece doesn’t quite have a point, but it’s delightful to read Moore and her incisive humor take it on anyway.

Moore begins by expressing her surprise upon discovering, at a party, that other smart writers love Friday Night Lights, too (even though Joshua Ferris has already exposed his soft spot for the series). If her shock didn’t make it clear that Moore usually consumes higher-brow entertainment, she follows it up with a joke that “the title might make the uninitiated think of shabbat candles,” which is a funny line, but probably not a common mistake. Americans, widely known for being super-familiar with shabbat, not television!
