Dave Chappelle Explains His Strange Onstage Behavior

“Comedy is a very approval-oriented field,” Dave Chappelle says. “If I put forth a legitimate effort, then I feel like, if that doesn’t work out, that’s all I can do.” This meandering, under-revealing interview with a morning radio show in the Bay Area doesn’t cover everything you’d want to hear Chappelle talk about, but he does explain a few of his onstage shenanigans, like the time earlier this summer when he completely shut down during a performance. According to Chappelle, people in the front few rows were filming and heckling him, and he thought he was going to get goaded into a “reverse Kramer.”

The best part of this whole interview is how deftly Chappelle handles and dodges the douchey comments and leading questions from the morning zoo hosts. Can he please do “WTF” soon?
