Dish Network–Blockbuster Take Aim at Netflix

On the back of news that Netflix is upping its rates and losing a huge cache of Sony and Disney titles (as well as a sizable drop in the company's stock price Friday), more bad news for the video rental giant: satellite-TV provider Dish Network wants in on the action. The company, which bought a bankrupt Blockbuster back in April, plans to roll out a video streaming service alongside the few remaining Blockbuster stores and the growing network of Blockbuster Express $1-a-night video rental boxes. Some are already asking whether the new venture might snap up the film library that Starz has not renewed with Netflix, though Starz is keeping mum. As for the consumer, here's to hoping competition means even more content available on-demand and, despite Netflix's recent move, on the cheap. [THR]
