John Mayer is canceling his upcoming performances and postponing the release of his next album owing to a growth near his vocal cords, he explained on his Tumblr today. Mayer says he has a granuloma, which is a type of lesion in one’s throat that can cause hoarseness and pain, and that he’s undergoing treatment but progress is unpredictable. “This is a temporary setback, though I’m not sure how long or short a period of time it will be,” he writes. Mayer’s fifth album, Born and Raised, was supposed to be released this fall, but he says that he “couldn’t finish singing on several of the tracks,” and that the album will now be released in 2012. “I will be singing and touring again as soon as I get the all clear,” he writes, and “until then I’ll be spending time writing and composing more music and kicking an empty soup can around the West Village.” Step aside, Sad Keanu; Sad John Mayer is coming.
