When the nominees were announced for the prestigious 2011 Mercury Prize (given to the top British album of the year), it seemed unlikely that anyone could dethrone U.K. darling Adele, whose crushing dominance of pop radio this year made her by far the most high-profile contender. And yet, in a surprise twist, the prize has gone to PJ Harvey for her album Let England Shake (Harvey previously won for 2000's Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea), which triumphed over fellow nominees including Adele's 21, Elbow's Build a Rocket Boys!, and James Blake's self-titled album. At least Adele might have a significant consolation prize? [ArtsBeat/NYT]
