No pun intended! It was announced today that Fox Searchlight will distribute the dark sex-addiction drama Shame, which will surely be released with an NC-17 rating owing to its explicit nature and the full-frontal nudity from its stars, Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. (It wouldn't be the first time the specialty film division released a film with that rare rating: Fox Searchlight also put out Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers.) The Steve McQueen–directed Shame earned strong reviews on the festival circuit and will be released in time for awards season, but can material this challenging crack through? Fassbender and Mulligan may clean up with the critics' groups, but if they've got their sights set on an Oscar nod, they'd better start wooing Charlie from Lost and Beyoncé.
