After threatening legal action back in August, Syl Johnson has officially filed suit against Kanye and Jay-Z for an uncleared sample on “The Joy.” Johnson says the Throne (if they’re still actually going by that) used a part of “Different Strokes” without his permission or payment; his claim states that since Kanye first tried to include “The Joy,” with sample, on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, ‘Ye’s use of the sample on a second album is therefore “an example of knowing and willful misappropriation.” On the flipside, Johnson has a history of copyright lawsuits, only some of them successful.
