Even when it finally became clear that The King’s Speech was a lock for Best Picture at the last Oscar ceremony, many award prognosticators still predicted that David Fincher would split the win and take home the Best Director trophy for his much-lauded work on The Social Network. Instead, that award went to Speech’s Tom Hooper, but what might Fincher have said if he were called to the stage? In a new Vanity Fair article, Social Network screenwriter Aaron Sorkin teases the victory that never was, because he claims Fincher sent him the unused acceptance speech six hours after losing to Hooper’s very different movie.
