The "In Memoriam" segment at next year's Oscars will hit a little closer to home: Producer-director Gil Cates, who produced fourteen separate Academy Awards telecasts, has passed away. Cates started out as a director of movies such as I Never Sang for My Father and Oh God, Book II, but he produced his first Oscarcast in 1990 (a Billy Crystal year) and would assume the same duty for most of the following ceremonies until his final go-round in 2008 (when Jon Stewart hosted for the second time). TMZ reported the death; he was 77 years old. [TMZ]
